BWW Reviews: FLASHDANCE Splashes Down on the OC
by Michael L. Quintos - May 18, 2013

Despite having a cast of incredible triple threats, overall, FLASHDANCE: THE MUSICAL---the new, Broadway-bound stage musical based on the popular 80's-era movie of the same name---seems like a well-meant endeavor that needs a serious overhaul in its disjointed execution. The national tour company continues its Costa Mesa stop at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts through May 19. (more...)

by Michael L. Quintos - May 14, 2013

After spending time on Broadway and on tour, triple-threat actress Jillian Mueller can now be seen dancing up a (ha ha) storm in the National Tour production of FLASHDANCE, in which she plays leading lady Alex Owens---yes, the sexy steel mill worker who moonlights as a maniac, maniac, on the floor. The stage incarnation of the hit movie of the same name continues performances through May 19 at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. While settling into her final week of shows here in Orange County, Ms. Mueller agreed to some of our silly questions. Thankfully, she played along! (more...)

by BWW News Desk - April 25, 2013

Producer Thomas Viertel revealed in an official statement: We have had the rare and tremendous opportunity in the last several months to experience Flashdance - The Musical on the road. We know we have a great show that audiences are responding to with huge enthusiasm and nightly standing ovations. We want to make clear that because we could not find the appropriate Broadway theater for August, we will take this time to refine the production that we are excited to bring to Broadway in the 2013-2014 season. By that time, we will have determined the best possible theater and date to welcome Flashdance home to Broadway. (more...)

BWW Blog: Christian Whelan of FLASHDANCE - A View From My Office
by Guest Blogger: Christian Whelan - February 26, 2013

To Broadwayorld.com-ers: hello from sunny Tampa, FL, home to the Devil Rays, the Falcons, Busch Gardens and the 2700 + seat Straz Center for the Performing Arts. During our sound-check yesterday, I was struck again by how big the Straz looks from the stage. It's far from the biggest house we'll play on this tour-Atlanta's Fox has almost twice as many seats-but it does have a mezzanine, lower, and upper balconies, which puts the cheap seats three stories above the stage. Think about watching a show from the top of a three-story building 100 feet away from the stage. Forget opera glasses; you'd need a high-powered telescope. (more...)

BWW Interviews: Rachelle Rak of Broadway-Bound FLASHDANCE

You've probably seen the movie, but what does Flashdance The Musical have that the movie doesn't? One word. Sas. That's right ladies and gents. Broadway veteran Rachelle Rak has taken on the role of Tess in this brand new musical that is currently sweeping across the US. (more...)

BWW Blog: Christian Whelan of Broadway-Bound FLASHDANCE - To Drive or Not to Drive?
by Guest Blogger: Christian Whelan - February 20, 2013

I bought a toyota Prius in 2005. It was a sleek looking black hybrid with some nice perks on the inside. The onboard computer is pretty cool. When I offer a ride to people, at least the ones that have never been in a Prius, they're fascinated by the LED display that shows the transfer of power from the electric motor to the gas engine. It also shows how many Kilowatts are generated as the car drives. The most remarkable aspect of the Prius, however, is the AMAZING gas mileage. I still kick myself for not getting the onboard GPS function. Especially since I've made the educated decision to drive, yet another tour. (more...)

BWW Reviews: What a Feeling From Hippodrome's FLASHDANCE - THE MUSICAL
by Giordana Segneri - February 13, 2013

Now, 30 years (three decades!) later, Flashdance--The Musical is back to remind us of the raw spirit, sparkly promise and (possibly drug-enhanced) energy of that bubble gum-laden, neon-hued era when innocence was much more innocent and people actually believed that dancing could save the world. Except this, the original U.S. national touring production (note that it has not yet made it to Broadway), has toned down the horrific '80s fashion faux pas and added a bit more 21st-century sophistication. (more...)

BWW Blog: Christian Whelan of Broadway-Bound FLASHDANCE - Reunions
by Guest Blogger: Christian Whelan - February 12, 2013

From FaceBook to FLASHDANCE, reunions of the tour kind can often be more of a surprise than seeing that 'friend request' pop up from someone you haven't seen or heard from in 35 years. A professional acting career can often take twists and turns that eventually rocket actor's away from their home town and the people that helped to shape who we are and what we become while pursuing our dreams. I've certainly reconnected with my fair share of old colleagues & friends through social media. But, it's nothing like seeing an old friend when they just appear at the stage door following a performance in a random tour city. (more...)

BWW Blog: Christian Whelan of Broadway-Bound FLASHDANCE - Equity Pancakes

Preferably consumed at night, after a show, and garnished with a salty sweet pork product on the side. (Bacon Forever!) (more...)
