2nd Annual One Minute Play Festival Set for 6/10-11

(5/24/2013) - Actor's Express and the New York-based company, The One-Minute Play Festival (OMPF)announce their joint presentation of The 2nd Annual Atlanta One-Minute Play Festival, to be performed on June 10th and 11th 2013 at 8pm. Following sold-out performances last season, this year's festival will be a larger, more inclusive, and more ambitious collaboration between Actor's Express and OMPF.

Michael Feinstein Performs With the Atlanta Symphony Tonight

Puppeteers everywhere, from Africa to South America, use animals to tell stories about their cultures, traditions and everyday life. This exhibit showcases different ways animals are represented by artists and how those representations relate the artist's cultural heritage and creative talent.

Atlanta's 2nd Annual Black Vintage Movie Series Set for 6/22

(5/23/2013) - Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall and the Black Vintage Movie Series, Inc. are proud to announce the2nd Annual Black Vintage Movie Series on June 22, 2013 at the Balzer Theater at Herren's (Home of Theatrical Outfit). The one day event will include a performance by the Still Waters Sinfo-Nia Youth Orchestra Quintet at 2:15 P.M. in the theater prior to the movie in the spirit of the Vaudeville era followed by a screening of the 1929 classic "Hallelujah" at 3 PM, a screening of the 1940 classic 'Broken Strings' at 6 P.M., followed by a performance by award winning gospel choir Anointed Voices at 7 P.M.

BWW Reviews: Cast Thrives in Uneven, But Intense SEMINAR at Actor's Express

(5/22/2013) - Like on her Broadway-themed television show 'Smash,' in 'Seminar,' running through June 16th at Actor's Express, Theresa Rebeck pulls away the curtain to revel the struggles required to create something for the enjoyment of others. Being able to see those struggles, both personal and creative, is a bit like seeing a sausage being stuffed; it can be ugly, but, if done well, the results are nonetheless appetizing. While Rebeck's script is mostly edge-of-your-seat exciting, it is riddled with lukewarm cliches. Thankfully, the superb cast compensates with deliciously rich performances. Directed by Suzi Award winner Freddie Ashley, 'Seminar' almost completely avoids the self-important tedium of a writer writing about writers who complain about how difficult writing is.

BWW Reviews: Heartbreaking DANCING AT LUGHNASA Is Rewarding Experience at Stage Door Players

(5/21/2013) - The emotional memory play 'Dancing at Lughnasa,' running through June 9th at Dunwoody's Stage Door Players, is alternately touching and harrowing. This bittersweet duality is due in large part to deep, layered performances by a skilled cast and the insightful direction of three-time Suzi Bass Award winning actress Tess Malis Kincaid. Even though the play's setting is thousands of miles and the better part of a century removed from present day Atlanta, each character, and their individual and collective struggles, seems remarkably contemporary. While the play, by Tony-winner Brian Friel, is not the traditional comic summer fare, its lighthearted moments, mixed in amongst heartbreak, are genuinely emotional.

ASC Receives NEA Grant to Support Public School Residencies

(5/3/2013) - National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa announced last week that the Atlanta Shakespeare Company is one of 817 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. The resident company of the New American Shakespeare Tavern in Atlanta is recommended for a $30,000 grant to support their Total Access Shakespeare residency programming with local public schools.
