THE BOOK CLUB PLAY, THIRD COUNTRY and More Highlight Horizon Theatre's 29th Season

Horizon-Theatre-Announces-29th-Season-of-Contemporary-Plays-20010101

Fresh, provocative and spell-binding, Horizon Theatre Company has announced its 29th season of Contemporary Theatre. The new lineup features an audience favorite back by popular demand, two Atlanta premieres of new American plays, and a world premiere commissioned through Horizon's popular New South Play Festival. Horizon's intimate 172-seat theatre can be found in Atlanta's funky Little Five Points district.

The season opened January 11, 2013 with an encore production of Horizon's sold-out summer hit The Waffle Palace by local playwrights Larry Larson and Eddie Levi Lee. Inspired by real life events at Waffle House restaurants, ArtsATL praised the show as "an easy-to-eat mixture of the funny, familiar, corny, nostalgic, and odd," perfect for theatre-goers and Waffle House regulars alike. The production is directed by Lisa and Jeff Adler and is playing now through March 17th.

In May, Horizon will stage the Atlanta premiere of Karen Zacarías' The Book Club Play. A delightful new comedy following a tight-knit group of friends' cherished book club, the play is full of zany characters and literary laughs. The Book Club Play takes the stage May 17 - June 23, 2013.

The summer continues with a second Atlanta premiere, every tongue confess by Marcus Gardley. Gardley was a finalist in the first Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition at the ALLIANCE THEATRE in 2005 and was recently awarded a playwriting residency at Victory Gardens Theatre in Chicago by the Mellon Foundation. The summer heat is rising and flames fly high in Gardley's fantastical whodunit that blends myth, miracle, and magical realism. Thomas W. Jones II returns to Horizon to direct this intergenerational tale wrapped in combustible comedy and sweat-soaked gospel music running July 12 - August 25, 2013.

Horizon's 2013 main stage season concludes with the world premiere of Third Country by Suehyla El-Attar. Third Country is the story of a refugee and the resettlement worker who is her guide to a strange new home in a small Southern town. El-Attar, author of Horizon's The Perfect Prayer, was inspired by events in nearby Clarkston, Georgia, a community brought to national attention by the Fugees, a soccer team of refugee boys, and the best-selling book Outcasts United. This poignant new play looks at what happens when we are forced to redefine and share our homes. Third Country is commissioned by Horizon as part of its New South Play Festival and runs September 20 - October 20, 2013.

To close out 2013, Horizon invites audiences to celebrate the holidays with the red-hot sensation The Santaland Diaries by David Sedaris starring Harold M. Leaver as Crumpet, back for its 15th year. And for families Horizon stages the 6th production of Madeline's Christmas, an adorable adaptation of Ludwig Bemelmans classic storybook starring 24 local girls performing alongside professional actors.

Season tickets are on sale now for Horizon's four-play season with package prices ranging from $35 to $100. Subscriber perks include a reserved seating section, free Wild Card passes for friends, and discounts to The Santaland Diaries and other special events. Subscriptions and single tickets can be purchased by phone at 404.584.7450 or online at horizontheatre.com.

Horizon Theatre Company, 1083 Austin Avenue, connects people, inspires hope and promotes positive change the stories of our times. The company produces professional area and world premieres of smart, funny and provocative contemporary plays.
